Unfortunately, Onyx's health started to fail and when he went into respiratory distress, he was rushed to the hospital where it was determined he had pneumonia, possibly from internal damage. Additionally, Onyx was not defecating and he may have had damage to his colon. Onyx was suffering so we felt it best he be released from his pain and agony.
-------------------------
A Good Samaritan brought Onyx to us after he found him crying in his front yard. At just 14 weeks of age, it appears as though Onyx had been hit by a car. He has a broken tibia, pelvis and tail. Onyx is under the care of a surgeon at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital. His doctor feels that with the rapid growth rate at Onyx's young age, he should be completely healed in 4 weeks with just a splint on his leg and we can expect a full recovery. We are going to have to wait and see about his tail for a couple of weeks. It may need to be amputated but Onyx would do fine without his tail. So for the next month, Onyx will recuperate in his foster home in a crate which has been specially modified for handicapped accessibility so he can easily get in and out of the litter box with the huge splint on his leg. We expect Onyx should be available for adoption towards the end of October. Onyx will also be neutered prior to that time.
Even while in pain when Onyx was first brought to us, we found him to be a very loving and affectionate kitten. Simply looking at him engages his purr motor. He loves belly rubs. During his hospital stay, we received many comments from technicians and veterinarians about how sweet they found Onyx to be.
