FRITZ WAS ADOPTED JULY 16, 2000!
CONGRATULATIONS TO FRITZ AND HIS NEW FAMILY!
An Update From Fritz' Family:
Fritz had an uneventful ride home with us.  He seemed to like the travel crate and there wasn't a cry or a whimper out of him.  After a shopping spree for a harness and leash, we came home where Fritz promptly squeezed under the kitchen gate, into the living room, where he "christened" both living room rugs!  (talk about marking your territory! I guess this is officially home!) We took a walk around the block and introduced Fritz to all the neighborhood animals and he had a wonderful time.  He seems very much at ease and we think he is going to be very happy with us.
FRITZ
Can you believe that someone would lose a handsome little guy like me?  Yup, that is what happened.  They let me get away without any ID on and I just wandered around aimlessly until two kind ladies picked me up and took me to the animal control facility.  I was very unhappy in a cage at the dog pound so the animal control officer let a volunteer from Friends of Linden Animal Shelter take me into her home for the duration of my 7 day hold.  I was much happier there.  But I couldn't be put up for adoption for 7 days just in case my owners came looking for me.  But nobody ever did so here I am, up for adoption.
So fine, tease me if you must, but yes, I am often referred to as a "Wiener Dog".  More precisely, I am a Longhaired Wiener Dog, I mean, Dachshund.  This is what they say about my breed:
Half a dog tall, two dogs long. Playful, loving, high-spirited, protective, bold to the point of rashness. The ultimate big dog in a small package. If you've had a dachshund before, there is no other breed. Mischievous and stubborn, dachshunds are not the dog for everyone.

And for a bit of Dachshund trivia...
Dachshund (German, "badger dog"), breed of hunting dog having short legs, a long body, and long ears. Originally developed in Germany, dachshunds were used to drive badgers from their holes, which the dogs could enter because of their short legs. Seldom used for hunting today, dachshunds are valued as pets for their bravery and good disposition. They have short hair, and have hound like heads. Standard sizes range in weight from 15 to 22 pounds; the miniature variety weighs much less. Dachshunds range in height from 5 to 9 inches. Long-haired and wire-haired varieties have been bred by crossing the short-haired variety with spaniels and terriers.

On a more personal note, I am about 6 months old, weigh 10 pounds, and still need a little work on my housebreaking.  I am being crate trained and that will speed up the housebreaking tremendously.  So if I sound like I am your kind of guy, please fill out an application to adopt me!
