BAXTER WAS ADOPTED JULY 8, 2000!
CONGRATULATIONS TO BAXTER AND HIS NEW FAMILY!
An Update From Baxter's Mom:
I just came up to the computer to drop you a line about Baxter (who is now named Duffy) and found your message.   This dog is wonderful!   He has become very attached to me and is getting closer to my husband.  He still chases the cat, but they are sniffing each other, and I think will become friends with time.   He started out in the large bathroom downstairs, and after four days of no accidents, I decided to give him the run of the house.  Well, as predicted, he now sleeps in bed with us, resting close against my hip!   He is loving and obedient.  He comes immediately when I call him (even with a brand new name). He isn't much for playing with toys, but is perfectly happy sitting in my lap or lying on the floor next to wherever I am. He likes walking the neighborhood on his leash and riding in the car.    We are still working out the food issue, but will keep at it. (NOTE:  Duffy did NOT like dog food!) Duffy is a determined watchdog and barks very convincingly at the mailman. Yet, when he meets anyone away from the house, he is friendly and calm.   I am still keeping him on lead when anyone approaches the house, just to make sure he won't go after anyone.   Our vet removed his stitches and I have his Frontline and heartworn medications to give him at the appropriate times.  My husband built Duffy I nice fenced in area in the rear yard and he has a brand new dog house, so he can spend some time outside occasionally. Thank you again for allowing us to adopt this wonderful little ball of love.   He is a real joy.
Baxter's Story:

Can you see the difference between the pictures to the left and those above?  Those are my before and after pictures.  What a little soap and water won't do!  I was on my own traveling the dusty highways for quite some time.
I was picked up as a stray by the Linden Animal Control.  At first I hid in the back corner of my cage where nobody could see me but after a couple of days I became brave enough to come out.  It's a good thing, too because coming out of my cage landed me in a foster home and got my handsome picture on the Internet!
My foster mom says I need to be neutered ASAP because I like the ladies too much.  OK, so there are some hot babes living in this house (even if they are 10 times bigger than me and spayed) and I just can't help myself.  But my foster mom says they find my advances annoying so I need a little "attitude adjustment", pronto!.
I didn't eat anything for a whole week.  I am only 10 pounds - how long can a guy go without food?  But everyone at the pound kept putting this gross dog food down in front of me.  YUK!  It is people food I want and finally my foster mom discovered that when she gave me a piece of hot dog after I wouldn't eat my dinner.  But you know what?  That hot dog is starting to taste more and more like dog food.  She wouldn't be sneaking any dog food in with it, would she?
My foster mom keeps me in a crate sometimes.  A cried a little at first because I was scared but she put a cover over the crate so the other dogs would stop staring at me and then I was quiet.  Now I know the other dogs and cats and I like them so they don't scare me any more and I never cry in my crate now.  I just lay down and nap because I know my foster mom will let me out often to go and play in the yard.  I never soil my crate either.  My crate is my castle!
Well, it happened.  My Casanova days have come to an abrupt end.  I was dropped off at the vet's office and I came out a changed man.  No more chasing after the ladies for me.  While they had me knocked out for surgery, they also cleaned my teeth.  Now my days of eating only table food are over too!  We want to keep those choppers clean and healthy!  I have finally settled on tuna water dribbled over some Gaines Burger.  I expect that dry dog food will be introduced next.  Oh my, how one's circumstances can change!
My foster mom says she can already see a difference in me since my neutering.  I lay in her arms like a baby so she can clean my stitches.  I do so like being pampered!  And when we sit outside, I always lay down next to my foster mom to keep her company.  My foster mom says that I have really grown on her.   That says a lot since she prefers really big dogs.
If my foster mom is holding me and a stranger walks up, I must do my job and protect.   I can sound quite intimidating.  (OK, so humor me here!)  But when my foster mom puts me down, I run over and sniff the stranger and I am then able to determine whether it is friend or foe.  So far I have only met friends.
